Massey Ferguson 04.1.11 – Transmission Module / Controller: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously measures the current (amp) draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specified limit, the controller logs this code. This condition typically means the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause

  1. Battery & Power Supply Check: Ensure the battery is fully charged (around 12.6V) as low system voltage can cause solenoid actuation issues.

  2. Wiring Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the transmission controller to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for rubbed wires causing a short to ground, or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  3. Voltage Test: Disconnect the solenoid and test the connector leads. Verify that the circuit is receiving 12 volts when the forward/reverse shuttle lever is engaged in the reverse position.

  4. Solenoid Resistance/Amp Draw Test: Use a multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid's pins. If the internal coil is burnt out (open circuit) or shorted, the amp draw will fall outside the controller's acceptable parameters, confirming the solenoid is the culprit.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the forward/reverse proportional solenoid valves on the transmission input unit / valve block.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical plug from the reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining hardware and carefully pull the solenoid valve from the block.

  4. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and tighten the retaining hardware.

  5. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical harness back into the solenoid, ensuring the connector clicks into place and is free of dirt or corrosion. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Transmission Calibration

    After replacing transmission solenoids, it is highly recommended to perform a transmission calibration (e.g., Dyna-4 / Dyna-6 calibration) via the tractor's computer interface. This ensures the controller learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid, preventing jerky reverse shifting.
