Issue description

The transmission controller supplies a regulated 10-volt reference signal to various transmission sensors (such as speed sensors and temperature sensors). This code indicates that the module is detecting a voltage drop on this specific 10V output circuit, which is typically caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, a shorted sensor pulling the voltage down, or an internal failure within the module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Check the 10V Output: Using a multimeter, measure the voltage at the 10V supply pin directly at the transmission module. If it reads significantly lower than 10V, proceed to isolate the circuit.

  2. Isolate the Sensors (Sensor Short Cause): Disconnect the sensors that rely on the 10V supply one at a time (e.g., transmission oil temperature sensor TR24, forward/reverse speed sensors, PTO output speed sensors). If the voltage returns to 10V upon unplugging a specific sensor, that sensor has an internal short.

  3. Inspect the Wiring Harness (Wiring Short Cause): If unplugging the sensors does not restore the voltage, check the wiring harness between the transmission module and the sensors for chafing, pinched wires, or shorts to the tractor chassis (ground).

  4. Check Module Power/Ground (Module Failure Cause): Verify that the transmission module itself is receiving proper battery voltage and has clean, secure ground connections.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable before repairing wiring or replacing modules.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to ground was found in the harness during diagnostics, repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors, or replace the affected harness section. Route the harness away from sharp edges or hot transmission components.

  3. Replace Faulty Sensor

    If a sensor was identified as the culprit (e.g., the transmission temperature sensor located on the gearbox cover), unscrew the old sensor. Apply a small amount of thread sealant (like Loctite 542) to the new sensor's threads, install it, and torque to specification. Reconnect the harness.

  4. Replace Transmission Module

    If the wiring and sensors are perfectly intact but the module fails to output 10V, the internal power supply of the module has failed. Remove the mounting hardware and harness connectors from the old module, install the new module, and have a dealer program/calibrate it to the tractor using the Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn on the ignition, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.1.17 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
