Massey Ferguson 04.1.40 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU): Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS)

The transmission travel range is not recognized correctly or there is a plausibility error with the speed/range sensor values, meaning the controller cannot verify which range the transmission is currently engaged in. This specifically points to the B016 Travel Range Detection Sensor.

   Verify the 8.5V supply to the sensor circuit by checking the A013 module and the corresponding fuse (typically fuse 06 or 07 depending on the tractor model).

   Perform a software test using Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software: navigate to the gearbox tab and view the range window. When a transmission range is engaged, the sensor status should show as 'open'.

   Perform an in-situ multimeter test: connect diagnostic harness X899980246204 between the sensor and the tractor's wiring harness. Connect a multimeter between pins 1 and 2. Start the engine and activate the appropriate range (voltage must read approximately 14V). Activate a different range (voltage must drop to 0V).

   Prep the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

   Drain Fluid

   Partially drain the transmission fluid if necessary to prevent excessive fluid loss when removing the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Locate the B016 travel range detection sensor on the transmission housing and remove it.

   Bench Test (Verification)

   Connect the removed sensor to the diagnostic harness (X899980246204). Switch the ignition on. The multimeter must read 0V at rest, and jump to 12V-14V when you manually press the ball of the sensor. If it does not, the sensor is internally failed.

   Install New Sensor

   Install the replacement range position sensor into the transmission housing and tighten to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect and Refill

   Reconnect the wiring harness to the new sensor. Refill the transmission fluid to the proper level.

   Clear Codes

   Use the Wintest software to clear the 04.1.40 fault code and perform a test drive to ensure the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
