Massey Ferguson 04.1.55 – TRANS: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range

Issue description

The transmission control module is receiving a voltage or resistance reading from the transmission fluid temperature sensor that falls outside of the expected operating parameters. This typically indicates a failed sensor, a wiring issue (open or short circuit), or an unplugged connector rather than an actual overheating event.

Check the cause

  1. Locate the transmission temperature sensor on the transmission housing and check the electrical connector for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Trace the wiring from the sensor back toward the TRANS module. Look for chafed insulation, broken wires, or damage from field debris.

  3. Using a multimeter, test the resistance across the sensor's pins. If the sensor reads completely open (infinite resistance) or dead shorted (zero resistance), the sensor has failed internally.

  4. Verify the transmission fluid is at the correct level and is not severely degraded or contaminated, which could theoretically cause erratic temperature spikes.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission temperature sensor on the transmission housing to prevent dirt from entering the transmission when the sensor is removed.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Place a clean catch pan underneath the sensor area to catch any transmission fluid that may leak out. Unscrew and remove the faulty temperature sensor.

  5. Installation

    Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the transmission housing and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Fluid Check

    Check the transmission fluid level and top up any fluid that was lost during the swap.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu to clear the 04.1.55 fault code. Test drive the tractor to ensure the code does not return.
