04.1.92

Massey Ferguson 04.1.92 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS)

Issue description

The tractor's computer is receiving an invalid, erratic, or out-of-range signal from the transmission speed sensor. When this occurs, the system may default to a backup value, which can result in rough shifting, poor fuel economy, or a loss of optimized transmission control.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connections leading to the transmission speed sensor for damage, corrosion, or shorts.

  2. Perform a resistance test on the transmission speed sensor (specification is typically 540 +/- Ohms).

  3. Perform software diagnostics using the OEM Wintest software to verify sensor failure before replacement.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

The transmission speed sensor is located on the transmission housing. Note: On some larger models, accessing transmission/engine speed sensors may require removing a rear tire for clearance.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a wiring issue, repair the damaged wires or replace the connector pigtail.

  3. Replace the Sensor

If the sensor fails the Wintest software test or the resistance test, unthread the old sensor and install the replacement. Ensure the sealing ring/O-ring is properly seated to prevent oil leaks.

  4. Clear Codes

After installation, you must clear the fault codes from the tractor's computer to ensure the module recognizes the new sensor and restores proper shift timing.
