Massey Ferguson 04.1.A2 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): CAN BUS Message Missing (TRANS) / Actuator unit CAN bus actuation fault

Communication failure on the CAN bus network between the basic control unit (ECU) and the transmission actuator unit. The system is unable to send or receive the necessary signals to control the transmission adjustments, which will typically force the tractor into a restricted or emergency operation mode.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Basic Control Unit (A050) and the Actuator Unit (A009) for chafing, breaks, or corrosion

   Check the CAN bus pins at both the A050 and A009 connectors for proper voltage, continuity, and resistance (typically 60 ohms across the CAN High and CAN Low lines when the battery is disconnected)

   Check the power supply and fuses for the CAN bus circuit board to ensure the modules are receiving adequate voltage

   Verify that the transmission adjustment mechanism is smooth and not mechanically binding, which can sometimes trigger actuator faults

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Modules

   Locate the Basic Control Unit (A050) and the Transmission Actuator Unit (A009) on the transmission housing.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed damaged wiring or corroded connectors, repair the harness or replace the pigtail connectors. Clean any mild corrosion with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

   Replace Faulty Modules

   If the wiring tests perfectly, the fault lies internally within either the Actuator Unit (A009) or the Basic Control Unit (A050). Replace the faulty module.

   Reassemble and Reconnect

   Reconnect all harnesses and restore battery power.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Connect the AGCO Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) or FenDias software. Clear the stored 04.1.A2 fault code. If a module was replaced, you must perform an EOL (End of Line) programming and transmission calibration procedure before operating the tractor.
