Massey Ferguson 04.2.04 – Transmission Module (TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Clutch Pedal Sensor
Issue description
The controller is receiving an abnormal electrical signal from the clutch pedal potentiometer (often designated as component X68). The voltage is likely reading out of its expected range (either too high, too low, shorted to +12V, or an open circuit), which prevents the tractor from accurately determining the clutch pedal's physical position.

Check the cause
Inspect the clutch pedal linkage and the sensor fork for physical damage, binding, or a disconnected linkage arm.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the clutch pedal sensor for rubbed-through wires, corrosion in the connector pins, or a loose connection that could cause an open circuit or a short to +12V/Ground.
Perform a voltage sweep test using a multimeter to verify the reference voltage at the sensor connector. Back-probe the signal wire and slowly depress the clutch pedal; the voltage should sweep smoothly without dropping out or spiking. Erratic signals indicate internal wear.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the clutch pedal potentiometer (X68) mounted at the pivot point or base of the clutch pedal assembly in the cab.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Remove the retaining screws/bolts and carefully detach the sensor fork/linkage from the pedal assembly.
Install the New Sensor
Mount the new OEM clutch pedal sensor, ensuring the linkage or fork is properly aligned with the pedal's pivot mechanism. Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibrate the Sensor
You must perform a clutch pedal sensor calibration after replacement via the tractor's instrument panel (DOT Matrix keyboard) or a dealer diagnostic tool so the transmission module can learn the new minimum and maximum voltage values for the pedal's end-stops.
Clear Codes
Clear the 04.2.04 DTC from the Transmission module and test drive the tractor to ensure smooth shuttle shifting and clutch engagement.
