Massey Ferguson 04.2.0B – TRANS or TRANS1: Forward Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The electrical current (amperage) being drawn by the forward clutch solenoid is outside the expected normal parameters. This condition typically points to an internal failure within the solenoid coil (such as a short circuit or high resistance), a damaged wiring harness, or a poor electrical connection preventing the solenoid from operating the power shuttle transmission correctly.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission solenoids (typically found on the right-hand side of the gearbox). Inspect the wiring harness and the specific connector for the forward clutch solenoid for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Listen and feel for an erratic clicking noise coming from the valve block while the tractor is idling in neutral, or check if the solenoid is becoming excessively hot to the touch.

  3. Test the resistance (Ohms) and amp draw of the forward clutch solenoid coil using a multimeter. Compare the readings against the reverse clutch solenoid; a significant variance confirms a faulty coil.

  4. Ensure the transmission controller (TRANS1) is supplying the correct voltage to the solenoid when forward gear is engaged.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, disconnect the battery, and allow the transmission fluid to cool.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Identify the forward clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid in place, and carefully slide the solenoid coil off the valve stem (or unscrew the cartridge valve, depending on the exact transmission variant).

  4. Cleaning

Clean the mounting area thoroughly to ensure no dirt or debris enters the hydraulic system.

  5. Installation

Install the new forward clutch solenoid and secure the retaining fastener. Reconnect the weatherproof electrical connector.

  6. Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Clear the 04.2.0B fault code from the system. It is highly recommended to perform a clutch/transmission calibration procedure after replacing transmission components to ensure smooth, non-jumpy engagement.
