Massey Ferguson 04.2.0F – TRANS: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously monitors the current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls outside the expected parameters (typically lower than the minimum limit), it triggers this code. This underlying condition means the circuit is likely open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause
Verify Solenoid Energization: Check if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving power when the tractor is commanded into reverse.
Inspect the Connector: Check the pins on the reverse clutch solenoid valve connector. Look for pins that are disconnected, bent, pushed back, or rusty.
Wiring Harness Continuity: Test the wiring harness between the Transmission Control Module (TRANS) and the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for an open circuit, a short to ground, or chafed wires that could cause a loss of power supply.
Coil Resistance Test: Measure the internal resistance of the reverse clutch solenoid to determine if the coil itself has failed internally (open or shorted).
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all equipment to the ground, place all shift levers in neutral, apply the parking brake, and block the front and rear wheels.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block where the directional clutch solenoids are mounted.
Disconnect and Remove
Disconnect the electrical harness from the faulty reverse clutch solenoid. Clean the area around the valve to prevent debris from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining hardware and extract the solenoid valve.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid valve into the block and tighten the retaining hardware to OEM torque specifications.
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical connector back in, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place and the wiring is routed safely away from moving parts.
Perform Clutch Calibration
Because a PWM solenoid valve has been replaced, the transmission controller's memory must be recalibrated to learn the new valve's engagement characteristics. Initiate the clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's dashboard/diagnostic interface.
Clear Codes and Test
Clear the 04.2.0F DTC from the TRANS module. Start the tractor and test forward/reverse directional changes to ensure smooth engagement without the code returning.
