Massey Ferguson 04.2.11 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously measures the electrical current draw from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below a specific limit or is outside the expected parameters, it triggers this code. This typically indicates that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the TRANS1 controller to the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.
Use a multimeter to check the circuit for an open condition, a short to ground, or a loss of 12V power supply.
Unplug the reverse clutch solenoid and measure the resistance across its coil pins. If it reads as an open circuit (infinite resistance) or a dead short, the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Verify that the reverse clutch solenoid is actually being energized (receiving voltage) by the controller when the reverse shuttle is engaged.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing).
Disconnect and Remove
Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt or snap ring holding the solenoid in place, and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body.
Install New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new reverse clutch solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring issue rather than a failed solenoid, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wires or replace the damaged connector pigtail.
Reconnect and Reassemble
Plug the electrical connector back into the solenoid and reconnect the battery.
Transmission Calibration
After replacing transmission solenoids, it is highly recommended to perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often done via the dashboard or a diagnostic tool) to ensure the controller learns the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid and provides smooth shifting.
Test Drive
Clear the fault codes and test the tractor's forward/reverse shuttle operation to ensure the code does not return.
