04.2.12

Massey Ferguson 04.2.12 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue

Issue description

The transmission controller continuously monitors the electrical current (amperage) drawn by the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls below the acceptable limit or behaves erratically, the system logs this code. This typically indicates an electrical fault, such as an open circuit, a short to ground, a failed internal solenoid coil, or a loss of power supply to the solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the transmission valve body and reverse clutch solenoid for frayed wires, corrosion, or loose connections.

  2. Perform a resistance test (Ohms) by disconnecting the solenoid and measuring across its pins. An infinite reading indicates an open internal coil, while zero indicates a dead short.

  3. Conduct a voltage/activation test with the tractor safely parked and reverse shuttle engaged to verify the solenoid connector receives a 12V power supply from the transmission controller.

  4. Check the transmission fluid level and condition, as dirty or low fluid can cause mechanical sticking (though this code is primarily electrical).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

Locate the power shuttle valve block on the transmission housing and identify the reverse clutch solenoid.

  3. Removal

Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or clips securing the solenoid to the valve body.

  4. Extraction & Cleaning

Pull the old solenoid out. Clean the mounting port and surrounding area thoroughly to ensure no dirt or debris enters the transmission hydraulic system.

  5. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical wiring harness and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  7. Calibration

Start the tractor and perform a clutch pedal/transmission calibration procedure. This is highly recommended after replacing transmission components to resolve any harsh or jumpy clutch engagement.
