Massey Ferguson 04.2.13 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Open Circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller monitors the electrical current draw of the reverse clutch solenoid. If the current draw falls below a minimum threshold (or drops to zero), the system flags an "Open Circuit." This indicates a complete break in the electrical path, which prevents the solenoid from energizing. As a result, the transmission will likely fail to engage in reverse or may default to a neutral safety state.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked on level ground, implements are lowered, the engine is off, and the wheels are chocked. The tractor must not be able to move during testing.
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the solenoid for chafing, cuts, or melted insulation.
Disconnect the solenoid plug. Check the pins on both the harness side and the solenoid side for corrosion, moisture, or bent/pushed-out pins.
Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the reverse clutch solenoid. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Out of Limits / infinite resistance), the solenoid coil has failed internally and must be replaced.
If the solenoid tests good, check the continuity of the wiring harness from the solenoid connector back to the Transmission Control Module (TRANS) to find the break in the wire.
Repair steps
Preparation
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts. Clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the reverse clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt(s) or snap ring holding the solenoid in the valve block.
Extraction
Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical plug, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Because a transmission control component was replaced, you may need to perform a clutch/transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's onboard display or diagnostic software to ensure smooth engagement.
