Massey Ferguson 04.2.14 – TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Low Amps
Issue description
The transmission control module has commanded the reverse clutch solenoid to energize, but the electrical current (amperage) flowing through the circuit is lower than the expected threshold. This typically indicates high electrical resistance in the circuit, an open circuit, a failing solenoid coil (high internal resistance), or a poor ground/wiring connection.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked safely, the engine is off, and the parking brake is applied so the tractor cannot move during testing.
Inspect the wiring harness running between the TRANS1 module and the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block. Look for chafing, breaks, or loose connections.
Disconnect the reverse clutch solenoid electrical connector and inspect the pins for corrosion, dirt, or water ingress.
Use a multimeter to measure the resistance (ohms) across the solenoid coil pins. An unusually high resistance or an infinite reading (OL) confirms an internally failed (open) solenoid coil.
Verify the ground circuit for the solenoid to ensure it has a clean, low-resistance path, and check the voltage supply from the TRANS1 module to the solenoid when the reverse gear is commanded.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission system.
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block (often grouped with the forward clutch solenoid).
Disconnect the electrical connector from the faulty solenoid.
Remove the retaining bolt or clip securing the solenoid to the valve block.
Carefully pull the solenoid out of the valve block.
Have a rag ready to catch any residual hydraulic fluid.
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid.
Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining bolt/clip.
Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.
Check the transmission fluid level, topping up if necessary.
Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool.
Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure.
Installing a new solenoid alters the fill times and engagement characteristics of the clutch pack, requiring the TRANS1 module to relearn the engagement points.
