Massey Ferguson 04.2.85 – Transmission Module (TRANS / TRANS1): Issue With Speed Sensor Values (TRANS)

This fault indicates an irregularity or loss of signal from the transmission speed sensor (often referred to as the theoretical forward speed sensor or transmission input shaft speed sensor). The system detects that the sensor is either reporting no speed, an out-of-range value, or a discrepancy between the intermediate and forward speed sensors while the tractor is in motion.

   Perform diagnostic tests using Wintest software before replacing any sensors (required per Service Bulletin TRAC 43/08 to avoid voiding warranty claims)

   Perform a resistance test: Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance when stopped (should be 450 Ohms +/- 20)

   Perform a voltage test: Check for an alternating voltage output when the ring gear is rotating

   Inspect the sensor contacts, harness connections, and wiring for shorts, breaks, or corrosion

   Check the sensor air gap to ensure the sensor has not backed out, which would increase the air gap and cause a loss of signal

   Locate sensor

   Locate the speed sensor on the transmission housing (e.g., above the differential ring gear).

   Remove faulty sensor

   Disconnect the electrical harness and loosen the counter-nut to remove the faulty sensor.

   Apply thread sealant

   Apply a small amount of Loctite 5922 to the threads of the new sensor.

   Install new sensor

   Air Gap Adjustment: Fully screw the new sensor in by hand until it bottoms out against the gear.

   Set air gap

   Unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to set the correct air gap.

   Lock sensor in place

   Tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm to lock it in place.

   Reconnect harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Reset system and clear codes

   System Reset: Reset the system by moving the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, then press and release the clutch pedal. Clear the DTC codes using your diagnostic tool.
