Massey Ferguson 04.2.92 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS or TRANS1): Issue With Speed Sensor Values
Issue description
The controller is receiving erratic, implausible, or missing electrical signals from a transmission speed sensor (such as the input shaft speed sensor or theoretical forward speed sensor), causing the transmission to default to a limited operation mode or fail to calibrate.

Check the cause
Connect diagnostic software (such as Wintest) to monitor the live speed sensor values. Check if the signal drops out during operation.
Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter. A healthy Massey Ferguson inductive speed sensor typically outputs a resistance of approximately 450 Ohms (+/- 20 Ohms) when the tractor is stopped.
Check for an alternating AC voltage signal from the sensor while the internal ring gear is rotating.
Inspect the transmission harness and connectors for corrosion, moisture ingress, or chafing, which can skew the sensor values.
Ensure the sensor hasn't backed out due to a loose locknut, which would increase the air gap and cause a weak signal.
Repair steps
Removal
Disconnect the transmission wiring harness from the speed sensor. Loosen the counter-nut and unscrew the old sensor from the transmission housing/PTO cover.
Preparation
Apply a small amount of thread sealant (such as Loctite 5922) to the threads of the new sensor.
Installation & Air Gap Adjustment
Carefully screw the new sensor in by hand until it gently bottoms out against the internal gear teeth. Unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to establish the correct air gap.
Securing
Hold the sensor firmly in this position and tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm.
Reassembly
Reconnect the transmission harness. Clear the fault codes and test drive the tractor to ensure the TRANS module is reading the speed values correctly.
