04.X.03

Massey Ferguson 04.X.03 – Transmission Module (TRANS): Issue With Clutch Pedal Safety Start Switch (TRANS)

Issue description

The system is detecting a malfunction, misadjustment, or open circuit at the clutch safety switch (Bottom of Clutch Switch), which can cause a crank no-start condition or a sudden loss of drive/transmission engagement after the clutch pedal has been depressed.

Applies to these machines

  • 4707
  • 4708
  • 4709
  • 4710

Check the cause

  1. Listen for Engagement: Press the clutch pedal and listen closely near the pedal box. The switch should make an audible click. If there is no click, the switch is likely dead or misadjusted.

  2. Check Switch Adjustment: Inspect the rocker arm and switch alignment near the clutch pedal pivot. Ensure the switch has not vibrated out of position and that the pedal fully depresses it.

  3. Test for Continuity: Disconnect the switch and use a multimeter to test for continuity across the terminals. You should have continuity only when the switch plunger is manually depressed.

  4. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Check the wiring harness running to the clutch pedal box. Look for melted wires, chafing against the engine block/transmission housing, or moisture/corrosion inside the connector.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Switch

Locate the 'Bottom of Clutch Switch' situated in the pedal box / near the clutch pedal pivot under the dash.

  2. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and remove the key.

  3. Remove the Connector

Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the switch.

  4. Remove the Faulty Switch

Unscrew the retaining nuts or mounting hardware holding the threaded cylindrical switch body in its bracket.

  5. Install the New Switch

Thread the new switch into the bracket.

  6. Adjust the Plunger

Carefully adjust the depth of the switch so that the clutch pedal mechanism fully depresses the switch plunger when the pedal is pushed to the floor, but does not crush it. Tighten the locking nuts.

  7. Reconnect and Test

Plug the electrical connector back in. Attempt to start the tractor (it should only crank with the pedal down). Test drive the tractor to ensure the transmission engages smoothly without dropping drive.
