Massey Ferguson 04.X.08 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS): Transmission High/Low Range Position Sensor Issue

The sensor responsible for monitoring the physical position of the transmission's high/low range is sending an irregular, out-of-bounds, or missing signal to the tractor's computer, which can result in erratic shifting, loss of ground speed readings, or the transmission defaulting to a protective limp mode.

   Inspect the sensor's electrical connector for moisture intrusion, dirt, or corrosion

   Inspect the wiring harness leading from the sensor back to the TRANS module for chafing, breaks, or shorts caused by field vibration

   Ensure the sensor hasn't vibrated loose from the transmission housing, which could pull it out of its reading range

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission range position sensor on the exterior of the transmission housing.

   Disconnect

   Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove

   Remove the single mounting bolt securing the sensor to the housing and pull the old sensor out.

   Clean

   Wipe down the mounting port to ensure no dirt or debris falls into the transmission.

   Install

   Insert the new sensor and tighten the mounting bolt.

   Seal and Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back in. Ensure the weather seal is fully seated to prevent future moisture intrusion.

   Calibrate

   Clear the 04.X.08 DTC code using a diagnostic tool. Note: Depending on the exact model year and transmission software, the tractor's computer may require a transmission calibration/reset procedure to learn the new sensor's parameters.
