Massey Ferguson 04.X.0E – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TRANS1): Forward Clutch Solenoid Low Amps
Issue description
The controller is detecting a lower-than-expected electrical current (amperage) flowing through the forward clutch solenoid circuit. This typically points to high electrical resistance, an open circuit (such as a broken wire or disconnected plug), or an internally failed solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running from the TRANS1 module to the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, breaks, or loose connections.
Connector Check: Disconnect the plug at the forward clutch solenoid. Check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins that could cause high resistance.
Coil Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the forward clutch solenoid. If the reading shows an open circuit (OL) or unusually high resistance, the solenoid coil has failed internally and must be replaced.
Voltage/Continuity Test: Verify that the transmission controller is sending the correct supply voltage to the solenoid and that the ground circuit is intact.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission fluid to cool. Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission hydraulic control valve block (typically mounted on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the forward clutch solenoid.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or clips securing the solenoid to the valve block.
Extraction
Carefully pull the old solenoid valve out. Inspect the port for any debris or metal shavings that might indicate deeper transmission wear.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibration
Clear the 04.X.0E fault code using a diagnostic tool. Perform a clutch calibration procedure to ensure smooth forward/reverse engagement and prevent jumpy shifting.
