Massey Ferguson 04.X.0F – TRANS or TRANS1: Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The onboard diagnostic system has detected an abnormal electrical current (amperage) draw on the circuit responsible for the reverse clutch solenoid. This typically points to a short circuit, an open circuit, damaged wiring, or an internal failure of the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause
Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the parking brake is engaged, and the machine cannot move during testing.
Trace the wiring harness from the Transmission Control Module (TRANS1) to the reverse clutch solenoid. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or corroded connectors that could cause a short to +12V, a short to ground, or an open circuit.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the reverse clutch solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the internal resistance of the coil. A healthy OEM solenoid of this type typically measures around 10 Ohms. If it reads out of limits (OL) or shows zero resistance, the solenoid is internally shorted or open and must be replaced.
Verify that the solenoid is actually receiving an energized voltage signal from the controller when the reverse shuttle is engaged.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the engine, relieve any residual hydraulic pressure if applicable, and thoroughly clean the exterior of the transmission valve block where the solenoids are mounted to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.
Disconnection
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the side of the transmission. Carefully unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid.
Removal
Remove the retaining bolts or clips holding the solenoid valve in place. Pull the old solenoid out of the transmission block and dispose of it properly.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid valve into the block and secure it with the retaining hardware.
Reconnection
Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid.
Calibration & Clearing
Connect a specialized diagnostic tool to the tractor's OBD port to clear the 04.X.0F DTC from the TRANS1 module.
Testing
Start the tractor and test the forward/reverse shuttle shifting to ensure gradual, smooth engagement and verify that the code does not return.
