Massey Ferguson 04.X.12 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TRANS1): Reverse Clutch Solenoid Amp Draw Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller continuously measures the electrical current (amp draw) from the reverse clutch solenoid circuit. If the current draw falls outside the expected parameters (e.g., lower than the limit), it indicates that the circuit is open, shorted to ground, or has lost its power supply. This prevents the transmission from properly engaging the reverse clutch.

Check the cause
Locate the reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission valve block and visually inspect the wiring harness and electrical connector for corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage.
Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to verify if the reverse clutch solenoid is receiving a 12-volt signal from the transmission controller when the shuttle lever is moved to the reverse position.
Measure the resistance of the solenoid coil itself to check for an internal failure (open or shorted to ground).
If the solenoid tests fine but there is no voltage, trace the wiring back to the TRANS1 module to check for a broken wire or a short to ground.
Repair steps
Access the Solenoid
Locate the faulty reverse clutch solenoid on the transmission control valve block.
Remove the Faulty Part
Disconnect the electrical harness connector. Remove the retaining nut or bolt holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem, and slide the solenoid off.
Install the Replacement
Slide the new OEM solenoid onto the valve stem and secure it with the retaining hardware. Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place securely.
Clear Codes
Turn the key on and use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's dashboard interface to clear the stored 04.X.12 DTC.
Transmission Calibration
After replacing transmission solenoids, perform a transmission clutch calibration (PowerShuttle progressivity settings) via the left-hand screen on the dash or a diagnostic tool to ensure smooth forward/reverse engagement.
