Massey Ferguson 04.X.17 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TCU): Transmission Module Low Supply Voltage On 10 Volt Sensor Output Pin (TRANs)

Issue description

The Transmission Module supplies a 10-volt reference signal to power various transmission and drivetrain sensors. This code triggers when the module detects that the voltage on this specific output pin has dropped below the acceptable threshold. This is almost always caused by a short to ground in the wiring harness, an internally shorted sensor pulling the voltage down, or a failure within the module itself.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the tractor's battery and charging system to ensure the base system voltage is healthy.

  2. Perform a Sensor Isolation Test: Disconnect sensors powered by the 10V circuit (clutch pedal, foot throttle, transmission pressure sensors) one at a time while monitoring the 10V output pin at the module. If voltage returns to 10V, the unplugged sensor is internally shorted.

  3. Inspect the transmission wiring harness for chafed, rubbed, or pinched wires that could be shorting the 10V supply line to the chassis ground.

  4. Perform a Module Test: Disconnect the transmission harness entirely from the TRANS module and test the 10V output pin directly. If voltage is still low with nothing attached, the module has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

    Ensure the machine is powered down and safe to work on.

  2. Based on the diagnostic isolation test, locate the shorted sensor or the damaged section of the wiring harness.

    Identify the exact point of failure before proceeding with repairs.

  3. If wiring is damaged: Repair the shorted wire using proper soldering and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section if the damage is extensive.

    Ensure the repair restores the integrity of the 10V supply line.

  4. If a sensor is shorted: Remove the faulty sensor (e.g., clutch pedal sensor or transmission pressure sensor) and install a new OEM replacement.

    Replace the internally shorted component pulling the voltage down.

  5. Reconnect all sensor pigtails and the battery.

    Restore all connections once repairs or replacements are complete.

  6. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the AGCO EDT / CANUSB tool) to the tractor's diagnostic port and clear the stored 04.X.17 fault code.

    Clear the fault memory to verify the repair.

  7. Start the tractor and test drive it, operating the clutch and shifting through ranges to verify the 10V circuit remains stable and the code does not return.

    Confirm the repair under normal operating conditions.
