Massey Ferguson 04.X.20 – Transmission Controller (TRANS): Issue With Signal Voltage From Foot Throttle Sensor (TRANS)

The Foot Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) produces a variable voltage signal that reflects how far the pedal is pressed. The electronic control unit translates this signal to manage fuel injection, RPM output, and transmission shifting. This code triggers when the voltage signal sent from the foot throttle sensor exceeds or falls below the expected maximum/minimum range, or if the signal is erratic. When this occurs, the system may default to a limited RPM mode or refuse to respond to throttle inputs to protect the machine.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the foot throttle sensor for chafing, micro-cracks, or physical damage.

   Voltage Test: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference supply and has a solid ground.

   Signal Sweep Test: Monitor the signal wire voltage (or use an electronic service tool) while slowly pressing and releasing the pedal. Look for dead spots, drop-offs, or erratic voltage spikes.

   Module Verification: If the sensor and wiring test perfectly, the issue may lie within the transmission module itself (e.g., degraded solder joints or faulty resistors distorting the voltage interpretation).

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery terminal

   This prevents electrical shorts.

   It is located at the base of the accelerator pedal in the cab.
