Massey Ferguson 04.X.40 – TRANS / TRANS1: Issue With Speed Sensor Values

The controller is receiving erratic, missing, or out-of-range signals from the transmission speed sensor, which monitors the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft.

   Check if the axle/transmission speed sensor is physically loose in the transmission housing.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors (e.g., sensor connector C162 and chassis control module connector C002) for damage, corrosion, or open circuits.

   Test the sensor with a multimeter. A healthy OEM transmission speed sensor typically reads approximately 540 Ohms (+/-).

   Use the Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software to monitor active and requested speed values in real-time to confirm if the sensor is dropping the signal under load.

   Park the tractor on flat ground, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate the transmission speed sensor on the transmission housing.

   Typically threaded into the side of the case.

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

4. 4

   Loosen the counter-nut (lock nut) and unscrew the old sensor from the housing.

   Thread the new sensor into the housing until it gently bottoms out.

   It should touch the internal gear/toothed wheel.

   Back the sensor out by unscrewing it exactly 3/4 of a turn to set the proper air gap.

   Crucial Step.

   Hold the sensor in place and tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm.

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Clear the fault codes from the TRANS1 module using a diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor.

   Ensure the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
