Massey Ferguson 04.X.50 – TRANS: Transmission Filter Blocked

This fault code indicates that the transmission/hydraulic oil filter is clogged or restricted. The system monitors the pressure differential across the filter; when the filter becomes blocked by debris, dirt, or metal shavings, the transmission filter blockage switch/sensor triggers this code to prevent oil starvation and cavitation in the transmission and hydraulic pumps.

   Check the Sensor and Wiring: The transmission filter blockage switch (sensor) itself or its wiring can fail, sending a false 'blocked' signal to the TRANS module. Inspect the sensor harness for damage or shorts.

   Inspect Fluid Condition: Pull the transmission dipstick. Check for milky oil (water contamination), a burnt smell, or excessive metal filings.

   Check for Brake Material: A common cause of sudden filter blockage in Massey Ferguson tractors is the deterioration of the internal wet brake discs. If the tractor has been driven with worn brakes, the fiber material or metal filings will break up and clog the filter.

   Verify Fluid Level: Ensure the transmission oil is at the correct level and operating temperature, as cold, thick oil can sometimes cause temporary pressure differentials.

   Warm Up the Tractor

   Run the machine briefly to warm the transmission fluid, which thins the oil and helps suspend contaminants so they drain out.

   Drain the Fluid

   Park on a level surface, turn off the engine, and place a large catch pan under the transmission sump. Remove the drain plug(s) and allow the oil to drain completely.

   Remove the Filter

   Locate the transmission/hydraulic oil filter (often a spin-on element on the side of the transmission housing). Unscrew and remove the old filter.

   Inspect the Old Filter

   Cut the old filter open if possible. If you find heavy metal shavings or brake friction material, the tractor will require a deeper internal repair (such as a brake job or clutch pack replacement) and a complete system flush.

   Install the New Filter

   Clean the filter housing base. Apply a thin film of clean hydraulic oil to the rubber gasket of the new transmission filter. Thread it on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten according to the filter's instructions (usually 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn).

   Refill the Fluid

   Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer. Refill the transmission with the correct OEM-specified hydraulic/transmission fluid (e.g., Permatran or M-1129A equivalent).

   Start the tractor, check for leaks around the filter, and verify that the 04.X.50 fault code clears.
