Massey Ferguson 04.X.53 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Transmission Oil Temperature High

The temperature of the transmission/hydraulic fluid has exceeded the safe operating threshold (often above 110°C). When this code is active, the tractor may initiate an automatic engine shutdown or enter limp home mode to prevent catastrophic damage to the transmission components.

   Check Fluid Levels: Park the tractor on level ground, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Wait 3-5 minutes for the fluid to settle. Locate the sight glass or dipstick near the rear axle. The fluid should register between the 'Min' and 'Max' marks.

   Inspect for Filter Blockages: Check if the tractor is also throwing codes 04.02.49 (Transmission Filter Blockage Sensor Issue) or 04.02.50 (Transmission Filter Blocked).

   Inspect the Oil Cooler: Check the transmission oil cooler and radiator for dirt, debris, or chaff buildup that could be restricting airflow and preventing proper cooling.

   Test the Sensor and Wiring: Inspect the electrical connection at the transmission temperature sensor for corrosion, damaged wires, or a short circuit that could be sending a false high-temperature reading to the TCU.

   Clean the Cooling System

   If the radiator or oil cooler is plugged with field debris, thoroughly clean the fins using compressed air or a pressure washer (at a safe distance) to restore airflow.

   Correct the Fluid Level

   If the hydraulic/transmission fluid is low, top it off using the manufacturer-recommended fluid (e.g., AGCO Parts Transmission Oil). Do not overfill.

   Service the Filters and Fluid

   If the fluid is heavily contaminated or a filter blockage code is present, drain the transmission fluid from the sump, replace the transmission/hydraulic oil filters, and refill the system with fresh fluid.

   Replace the Temperature Sensor

   If the fluid level and cooling system are fine but the code persists, the sensor itself has likely failed. Locate the transmission temperature switch/sensor, disconnect the electrical harness, unthread the faulty sensor, install the new OEM sensor, reconnect the electrical harness and clear the fault codes.
