Massey Ferguson 04.X.54 – TRANS2: Transmission Temperature Signal Out Of Range
Issue description
The onboard diagnostic (OBD) system is receiving a voltage or resistance reading from the transmission temperature sensor that falls outside the expected operating parameters (typically caused by an open circuit, a short circuit to ground, or a short circuit to power).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission temperature sensor for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short circuit.
Disconnect the sensor and check the union/connector pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent pins.
Use a multimeter to check for an open circuit (0V/infinite resistance) or a short circuit (+12V) on the sensor signal wire back to the TRANS2 module.
Use a specialized diagnostic tool to view the live transmission temperature value. If it reads an impossible value (e.g., permanently pegged at maximum or minimum), the sensor or wiring is confirmed faulty.
Repair steps
Locate the Sensor
Identify the transmission temperature sensor on the transmission housing (often referred to as a temperature switch/union/banjo bolt configuration depending on the exact transmission type).
Disconnect the Battery
Ensure the machine is powered down and the battery is disconnected before servicing electrical sensors to prevent module damage.
Remove the Faulty Sensor
Disconnect the electrical harness. Unthread the transmission temperature sensor from the housing. Note: Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may leak during removal.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM temperature sensor into the port and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect Wiring
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor, ensuring the weather-tight seal clicks into place.
Clear the Code
Reconnect the battery. Use a specialized diagnostic tool to clear the 04.X.54 DTC from the TRANS2 module memory.
Test Operation
Start the tractor and monitor the transmission temperature via the dashboard or diagnostic tool to ensure it rises gradually and stays within normal operating range.
