04.X.56

Massey Ferguson 04.X.56 – TRANS: Transmission Filter Blockage Sensor Issue

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical or signal fault specifically with the sensor that monitors the transmission oil filter for blockages. While a different code (04.X.50) indicates that the filter is actually blocked, 04.X.56 points to an issue with the sensor itself, its wiring circuit, or an erratic signal being sent to the controller.

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission/hydraulic oil level and condition; cold, thick oil can cause pressure spikes that mimic a blockage.

  2. Inspect the transmission filter to determine if it is overdue for a change or heavily clogged.

  3. Locate the Transmission Filter Blockage Sensor (designated as component X20).

  4. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the X20 sensor for chafing, breaks, or corrosion at the connector plug.

  5. Test the wiring circuit for continuity back to the TRANS module.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Sensor

The transmission filter and its corresponding blockage sensor (X20) are typically located on the right-hand side of the transmission housing, near the main external high-pressure transmission oil filter.

  2. Prepare the Area

Clean the area around the sensor and filter housing to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic system. Place a drain pan underneath to catch any residual oil.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the X20 blockage sensor. Unscrew the faulty sensor from the filter housing/transmission block.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Thread the new OEM sensor into place and tighten to the manufacturer's torque specification. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Replace the Filter

To ensure the new sensor is reading a clean system, remove the old transmission filter and install a new one.

  6. Top Up Fluid

Check the transmission fluid level and top up with the correct specification Massey Ferguson hydraulic/transmission oil to replace any lost during the repair.

  7. Clear Codes

Start the tractor, allow it to reach operating temperature, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 04.X.56 DTC from the TRANS module.
