Massey Ferguson 04.X.61 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Low Speed Range Solenoid / Issue With Range 1 Solenoid Valve

The system has detected an electrical fault with the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52), typically an open circuit or a short circuit (+12 V or 0 V) on the solenoid valve's circuit. It can also be triggered if there is an inconsistency between the Range 1 switch and the Range 1 solenoid valve. When this fault occurs, the system usually disengages all ranges for 6 seconds (coasting) and re-engages the range that was active before the error, limiting the transmission to ranges not affected by the fault.

   Verify that the connectors for the 4 range solenoid valves and the 4 range position sensors are plugged into their correct locations (they can sometimes be inadvertently swapped during other maintenance).

   Inspect the wiring harness, contacts, and connections leading to the L52 Range 1 solenoid valve for corrosion, backed-out pins, or chafing that could cause a short to ground (0V) or power (+12V).

   Check the integrity of transmission control fuses, specifically F4 and F29.

   Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52). At ambient temperature, a healthy coil winding should read approximately 9.7 Ohms.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the Range 1 solenoid valve (L52). On Dyna-4/Dyna-6 transmissions, the range solenoid manifold is typically located on the right-hand side of the transmission housing.

   Isolate the Circuit

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the harness using OEM-approved weather-sealed connectors.

   Replace the Solenoid

   If the solenoid resistance is out of specification (e.g., infinite resistance indicating an open internal coil, or 0 ohms indicating a dead short), remove the retaining hardware and extract the L52 solenoid valve. Install the new solenoid valve and torque the mounting flange screws to spec.

   Reset the System

   Reconnect the battery and start the tractor. To clear the error state and reset the Autotronic 5 system, move the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, then press and release the clutch pedal.
