Massey Ferguson 04.X.62 – Transmission Controller (TRANS1): Issue With High Speed Range Solenoid / Issue With Range 2 Solenoid Valve

The system detects an electrical fault on the circuit for the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53). This is triggered by an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, a short circuit to ground (0V), or an inconsistency between the Range 2 position switch (L57 / X489) and the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53 / X485).

   Perform a coil resistance test on the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53) to check for an open circuit (infinite reading) or a dead short (near zero).

   Inspect the wiring harness from the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller to the L53 solenoid for chafed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion inside the connector plugs.

   Check the Range 2 position switch (L57) for consistency; ensure it is securely mounted and functioning to detect gear movement.

   Perform a voltage supply check by back-probing the connector with the key ON and tractor commanded into Range 2 to verify the 12V signal is being sent.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the transmission control valve block (usually situated on the side of the gearbox housing). Identify the Range 2 solenoid valve (L53).

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the L53 solenoid. Remove the retaining nut at the end of the solenoid stem.

   Coil vs. Cartridge

   If only the electrical coil has failed, slide the old coil off the valve cartridge and slide the new one on. If the mechanical valve cartridge is sticking, unscrew the entire cartridge from the valve block (have a catch pan ready for a small amount of hydraulic oil loss).

   Installation

   Install the new solenoid valve/coil. Tighten the cartridge and the retaining nut to the OEM torque specifications.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

7. 7

   Calibration/Clearing

   Connect a diagnostic tool to the 16-pin diagnostic connector to clear the 04.X.62 fault code. Start the tractor and cycle through the transmission ranges to confirm Range 2 engages smoothly without throwing the code.
