Massey Ferguson 04.X.69 – TRANS1 (Autotronic 5): Issue With Range 3 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Issue description

Electrical fault with the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54). The controller has detected an open circuit or a short circuit to +12 V or 0 V (ground) on this circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) controller and the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) for chafed wires causing a short to ground (0V) or power (+12V), or broken wires causing an open circuit.

  2. Disconnect the L54 solenoid and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

  3. Measure the resistance across the pins of the Range 3 solenoid valve. A healthy coil should measure around 10 Ohms. Infinite resistance indicates an open circuit, while near 0 Ohms indicates an internal short.

  4. Check the consistency between the Range 3 position switch (L58) and the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) to ensure the switch is not sending conflicting data to the controller.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block. Depending on the specific tractor series, this is typically found on the right-hand hydraulic cover plate or the side of the transmission housing. Identify the Range 3 solenoid valve (L54) among the bank of range solenoids (L52, L53, L54, L55).

  2. Relieve Pressure

    Ensure the tractor is turned off, the parking brake is engaged, and hydraulic pressure is relieved before removing any valves.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the electrical harness from the L54 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws/flanges holding the solenoid valve in place and extract the valve.

  4. Install the New Part

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque.

  5. Reconnect and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the key to the ON position and use a diagnostic tool (or Wintest software) to clear the 04.X.69 fault code from the Autotronic 5 module.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and shift through the ranges to verify that Range 3 engages smoothly without triggering the fault code.
