Massey Ferguson 04.X.6A – Transmission Controller (Autotronic 5 / TRANS1): Issue With Range 4 Solenoid Valve (TRANS1)

Electrical fault or logic error associated with the Range 4 transmission solenoid (L55). The system has detected an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V or 0V (ground), an inconsistency between the Range 4 position switch (L59) and the Range 4 solenoid valve (L55), or an internal component failure within the controller.

   Wiring & Harness Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness running between the Autotronic 5 (TRANS1) module and the L55 Range 4 solenoid valve. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground/power, or broken wires causing an open circuit.

   Coil Resistance Test: Disconnect the L55 solenoid and measure the resistance across its pins. A healthy OEM transmission solenoid coil for this system typically measures around 10 Ohms. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or shorted, the solenoid is dead.

   Switch Consistency Check: The Autotronic 5 module monitors the Range 4 switch (L59). Check the L59 switch for proper operation, as a faulty switch sending conflicting data to the module can trigger this code.

   Connector Pin Check: Check the Autotronic 5 module connectors and the L55 solenoid connector for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion.

   Locate the Valve Block

   Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the gearbox housing. You will see a bank of solenoids responsible for the ranges (L52 for Range 1, L53 for Range 2, L54 for Range 3, and L55 for Range 4).

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the area around the L55 solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission hydraulic circuit.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical plug from the L55 solenoid. Remove the retaining screws and the flange holding the solenoid valve in place.

   Install the New Valve

   Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert it into the valve block and tighten the retaining screws to the specified torque.

   Reconnect and Clear Codes

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the tractor on and use the onboard diagnostic menu or a dealer diagnostic tool to clear the 04.X.6A fault code.

   Test Drive

   Operate the tractor and shift through all ranges to ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
