Massey Ferguson 04.X.6E – TRANS1: Issue With Range 4 Engaged Switch Signal

The transmission controller is not receiving the correct electrical signal from the Range 4 position sensor (switch) when the transmission is commanded to shift into Range 4. If the switch fails to close or the signal is lost, the controller logs this fault and may prevent the tractor from shifting into that range or moving at all.

   Locate the Range 4 position sensor (L59) on the side of the transmission housing.

   Inspect the 2-pin connector at the L59 switch for dirt, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to verify that Pin 1 of the harness connector has a 12V supply.

   Test Pin 2 (the signal wire) for continuity back to the TRANS1 module to rule out a broken wire in the harness.

   Ensure the Range 4 control solenoid valve (L55) is functioning mechanically and electrically, as a failure here prevents physical engagement and switch triggering.

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Clean the area around the transmission range switches on the side of the gearbox.

   This prevents dirt from entering the transmission housing.

   Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the L59 (Range 4) position switch.

   Unscrew and remove the faulty switch from the transmission housing.

   Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid may weep from the port.

   Install the new Range Position Sensor and tighten it to the manufacturer's torque specification.

   Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.

   Connect a diagnostic tool (Wintest or EDT software) to the tractor and clear the 04.X.6E / 04.02.6E fault code.

   Start the tractor and test drive it, shifting through all ranges.

   Ensure Range 4 engages smoothly and the code does not return.
