Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the seat switch for pinched wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs.
Disconnect the seat switch and test it with a multimeter for continuity changes when weight is applied versus when empty.
Check the cab electrical and transmission control fuses in the main fuse box to ensure a short hasn't blown a fuse.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical shorts.
Access the Switch
Tilt the seat forward or remove the bottom seat cushion (depending on the specific Grammer or OEM seat model installed) to access the operator presence switch.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical pigtail connector from the seat switch.
Remove the Switch
Remove the switch from its mounting bracket. Many tractor seat switches use a simple twist-mount (quarter-turn) mechanism, while others may be held in by small retaining screws or clips.
Install the New Part
Seat the new switch into the bracket and secure it.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the switch, ensuring the connector clicks into place.
Test and Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Start the tractor and verify that the transmission engages properly when seated. Clear the inactive DTC 04.X.78 using a diagnostic tool.
