04.X.83

Massey Ferguson 04.X.83 – Transmission Control Module (TRANS / TRANS1): Issue With One Of The Transmission Speed/Direction Sensors

Issue description

A plausibility error where the speeds or direction of rotation do not logically match between the collecting shaft sensor and the bevel pinion sensor (or hydrostatic unit speed sensor). The fault is triggered if the input shaft speed sensor shows reverse movement while a forward gear is engaged, or if the signals are inconsistent.

Check the cause

  1. Connect diagnostic software (such as Massey Ferguson Wintest) to monitor sensor data and confirm the fault

  2. Inspect the physical aspect of the sensor pins and the wiring harness connector to ensure connections are clean and tight

  3. Check the sensor adjustment and clearance before removal

  4. Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance using a multimeter at room temperature (0 kph). A standard forward speed sensor should measure 450 Ohms +/- 20 Ohms. Other transmission speed sensors may specify a range of 2700 to 3300 ohms at 20°C (68°F). If out of spec, the sensor is faulty

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

Locate the faulty transmission speed sensor on the transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect sensor

Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  3. Inspect connector

Clean and inspect the connector for any dirt, corrosion, or damage.

  4. Remove sensor

If the sensor failed the resistance test, remove it from the transmission.

  5. Install sensor

Install the new transmission speed sensor.

  6. Torque sensor

Torque the sensor strictly to the manufacturer's exact specifications. Over-torquing can affect the internal clearance of the sensor, leading to electronic noise and immediate defects.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the wiring harness.

  8. Clear codes and test

Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor to ensure the plausibility error does not return.
