Massey Ferguson 04.X.96 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS1): Issue With Range 2 Engaged Switch And Range Solenoid 2

The transmission controller has detected an electrical fault, implausible signal, or mechanical failure preventing the transmission from successfully engaging Range 2. The system cannot verify that the Range 2 solenoid has actuated or that the corresponding switch has confirmed the gear engagement.

   Inspect the electrical connections to Range Solenoid 2 on the side of the transmission for an open circuit, a short circuit to earth, or a short circuit between cables.

   Test the Range 2 position sensor (L57, 2-pin connector) to verify Pin 1 is receiving a 12V supply and Pin 2 is sending a valid signal back to the TRANS1 module.

   Check transmission/hydraulic oil level and condition for milky oil (water ingress), burnt smell, or excessive metal filings. Ensure approved AGCO V-TRANS PLUS fluid is used.

   Attempt a Dyna-4/Dyna-6 transmission calibration to see if the transmission can successfully learn the Range 2 position or if it fails during the shift.

   Locate the Components

   Locate the bank of four range change solenoids and their corresponding switches on the side of the transmission housing.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Remove the Faulty Part

   Disconnect the electrical connector to Range Solenoid 2 and/or the Range 2 Engaged Switch. Unbolt and carefully remove the faulty component from the valve block.

   Install the New Part

   Fit the replacement solenoid or switch and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harnesses.

   Perform a Transmission Calibration

   Start the tractor and let the transmission fluid warm up. Hold the PowerShuttle lever up/forward and press the gear buttons for approximately 10 seconds until the right-hand dash screen displays "Ct". Place the PowerShuttle arm into the forward position to begin the calibration. Allow the tractor to cycle through the gears (this takes about 10 minutes; you will hear the transmission shifting). Once complete, the screen will display the transmission ratio (e.g., 1A/2A). To save the settings, place the shuttle in neutral, disengage the differential lock, idle the tractor down, and switch the engine off.

   Test Drive

   Restart the tractor and test drive through all ranges to confirm smooth shifting.
