Check the cause

  1. Inspect Wiring and Connections: Check the wiring harness leading to the sensor for breaks, chafing, or loose connections.

  2. Check the Tone Ring: The sensor must read off a tone ring. Inspect the tone ring for damage or debris.

  3. Check Sensor Gap: The sensor must be positioned correctly relative to the tone ring to provide accurate readings. An improper gap can trigger a calibration or erratic signal fault.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Always disconnect the tractor's battery before starting electrical work.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    The transmission input shaft speed sensor is typically located near the PTO shaft. Note that access in this area can be tight, so ensure you have the appropriate tools.

  3. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the mounting area around the old sensor before removal to prevent dirt and debris from falling into the transmission housing.

  4. Remove and Replace

    Remove the faulty sensor and install the new direct-replacement sensor. No modifications should be needed.

  5. Set the Gap

    Ensure the new sensor is positioned correctly relative to the tone ring.

  6. Test

    Reconnect the battery. If readings are erratic after installation, re-check the sensor gap and the condition of the tone ring.

  7. Clear Codes

    Use a specialized diagnostic tool to clear the 04.X.9D DTC from the TRANS2 module.
