04.X.A4

Massey Ferguson 04.X.A4 – TRANS (Transmission Controller): Issue With Transmission Actuator Internal Position Sensor DYNA VT (TRANS)

Issue description

An illogical condition in the transmission control module where the reference output (Position "0") is not found at start-up. The controller is unable to determine the baseline position of the transmission actuator, which prevents proper range shifting and operation.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission actuator's internal position sensor and the 96-pin EXT Lite transmission controller for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Check for accompanying CAN BUS communication codes (such as T41B0 or 04.X.B0) which may indicate a broader network initialization failure rather than a localized sensor failure.

  3. Verify if the reference point signal is being interrupted during the module's start-up phase (often associated with related code T41A5).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts while working on the transmission control system.

  2. Locate the Actuator

Locate the transmission actuator assembly on the Dyna-VT transmission housing.

  3. Inspect/Clean

Disconnect the sensor plug. Clean the contacts with electrical contact cleaner and ensure the pins are not pushed back into the connector housing.

  4. Replace the Sensor/Actuator

If the wiring is intact but the "Position 0" reference still cannot be found, remove the mounting bolts for the transmission actuator/position sensor and install the replacement unit.

  5. Re-initialization/Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Because the controller lost its "Position 0" reference, you will likely need to use a dealer diagnostic tool (EDT) to recalibrate the transmission control module so it can learn the new sensor's baseline position.
