Massey Ferguson 04.X.B1 – TRANS: Transmission Range Change Issue

The transmission control system has detected a fault with gear or range engagement. The system is unable to verify that the transmission has successfully shifted between ranges (such as the Hare/Tortoise ranges or Ranges 1-4). This is typically caused by an electrical inconsistency between the commanded range and the actual range detected, or a mechanical refusal to engage.

   Verify the transmission hydraulic oil level and check the transmission filter for blockages, as low pressure can prevent range engagement.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission range solenoids (usually a bank of four on the side of the transmission) and the range position sensors for rub points, corrosion, or loose connections.

   Test the range position switches (e.g., Hare/Tortoise range position sensor) for proper voltage (typically an 8.5V or 12V supply) and check for signal errors or voltage drops.

   Measure the coil resistance of the transmission range change solenoids to check for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

   Park and secure tractor

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

   Locate components

   Locate the bank of transmission range solenoids and range position switches on the side of the transmission housing.

   Disconnect connectors

   Disconnect the electrical connectors from the suspect range switch or solenoid.

   Replace range switch

   If diagnostics point to a failed switch (common issue), unthread the faulty transmission range position switch and install the replacement part.

   Replace solenoid

   If a solenoid is faulty, remove the retaining hardware for the specific range solenoid valve and replace it.

   Reconnect harnesses

   Securely reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the connectors click into place and are free of dirt or oil.

   Clear DTC

   Use a specialized diagnostic tool (or the tractor's onboard diagnostic menu) to clear the 04.X.B1 DTC code.

   Test drive

   Start the tractor and perform a test drive, shifting through all transmission ranges (Hare/Tortoise, Ranges 1-4) to ensure the transmission shifts smoothly and the code does not return.
