Massey Ferguson 04.X.B8 – TRANS1: Issue With Intermediate Speed Sensor Values

The controller is receiving an erratic, out-of-range, or missing signal from the intermediate speed sensor. The system typically flags this when no intermediate speed is detected while the theoretical forward speed or engine speed indicates the tractor is moving.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the intermediate speed sensor for backed-out pins, probed wires, corrosion, or physical damage.

   Disconnect the sensor and measure its resistance with a multimeter (should read approximately 450 Ohms ± 20 Ohms when stopped).

   Check for alternating voltage (AC) output from the sensor pins while the transmission ring gear is rotating.

   Use Massey Ferguson Wintest diagnostic software to monitor the intermediate speed sensor value (TR25) in real-time for erratic fluctuations or dropouts compared to engine and forward speed sensors.

   Locate

   Locate the intermediate speed sensor on the transmission housing (often positioned above the differential ring gear).

   Prepare

   Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Partially drain the transmission fluid if the sensor sits below the fluid level.

   Remove

   Disconnect the electrical harness and unscrew the faulty sensor.

   Install

   Apply a small amount of thread sealant (e.g., Loctite 5922) to the threads of the new sensor. Carefully screw the sensor in fully until it bottoms out against the gear. Crucial Step: Unscrew the sensor by exactly ¾ of a turn to set the correct air gap.

   Secure

   Tighten the counter-nut to approximately 6 Nm to lock the sensor in place.

   Reconnect

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Clear the DTC codes using a diagnostic tool. Alternatively, perform a system reset by moving the PowerControl lever to the neutral position, then pressing and releasing the clutch pedal.
