Massey Ferguson 04.X.C0 – Transmission Module (TRANS): Shuttle Lever Neutral Position Signal Error (TRANS)
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving an invalid, missing, or out-of-range electrical signal from the forward/reverse shuttle lever when it is supposed to be in the neutral position.

Check the cause
Check the physical shuttle lever on the steering column for excessive play, wear, or broken detents that may prevent it from resting perfectly in neutral.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector leading to the shuttle lever sensor/potentiometer for corrosion, bent pins, moisture ingress, or wire chafing.
Using a multimeter, check the voltage output of the shuttle position potentiometer or the continuity of the neutral safety switch to ensure correct readings in the true neutral position.
Verify that the clutch pedal potentiometer is functioning correctly, as a failure there can sometimes cause overlapping transmission codes.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, engage the parking brake, and remove the key.
Access the Sensor
Remove the steering column cowlings or access panels to reach the base of the shuttle lever. (Note: On some older models like the 6100 series, the shuttle potentiometer is located on the transmission cover on the right-hand side of the tractor).
Removal
Disconnect the electrical harness from the shuttle lever sensor, switch, or the lever assembly itself. Unbolt and remove the faulty component.
Installation
Install the replacement sensor or lever assembly. Secure the mounting hardware and reconnect the electrical harness.
Calibration
If replacing a potentiometer or the entire electronic lever, you must perform a shuttle calibration procedure. This teaches the Transmission ECU the exact new voltage values for Forward, Neutral, and Reverse.
Testing
Reassemble the cowlings. Turn the key and verify that the tractor only starts when the lever is in neutral, and that it shuttles smoothly between forward and reverse without throwing the 04.X.C0 code.
