   Verify the supply voltage to the Transmission Module. Low supply voltage can cause the controller to drop offline or generate internal software/logic errors.

   Check for any accompanying CAN BUS communication errors (e.g., 04.X.B0) to ensure the module is properly communicating with the tractor's main network.

   Connect the Massey Ferguson Electronic Diagnostic Tool (EDT) to read the current software version on the TRANS module and check for available OEM software patches.

   Reflash/Update Software

   Because this is explicitly a software issue, the first step is to use the dealer diagnostic tool to reflash or update the Transmission Controller to the latest software version.

   Clear Codes & Test

   After the reflash, clear the DTCs and perform a test drive to see if the 04.X.E3 code returns.

   Replace Controller (If Necessary)

   If the controller refuses to take the software update, or if the code immediately returns, the internal memory/processor of the controller has failed. You must replace the Transmission Controller.

   Calibration

   If the Transmission Controller is replaced, you must perform a full transmission calibration procedure using the diagnostic tool before the tractor can be operated.
