Massey Ferguson 05.0.53 – HITCH or TRANS1: Issue With Diff Lock Solenoid Circuit
Issue description
The control module has detected an electrical fault in the circuit that actuates the differential lock solenoid valve. This is typically caused by an open circuit, a short to ground, a short to 12V power, or a completely failed solenoid coil.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the rear diff lock solenoid for physical damage, chafing, or melted insulation that could cause a short or open circuit.
Disconnect the solenoid connector and the corresponding module connector (HITCH or TCU/TRANS1). Ensure the connectors are tight, not damaged, and that no pins are bent, pushed back, or corroded.
Use a multimeter to test the resistance of the diff lock solenoid coil. An open reading (infinite resistance) or a dead short indicates the coil has failed internally.
If the wiring and solenoid test fine, check the module output to rule out an internal failure within the TCU/Hitch controller.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the differential lock solenoid valve on the hydraulic control block. On many Massey Ferguson models, this is located on the right-hand hydraulic cover or near the rear PTO/axle housing.
Disconnect Electricals
Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the faulty solenoid.
Remove the Valve
Carefully unscrew the faulty solenoid valve from the hydraulic block. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may leak out.
Install the New Valve
Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Thread it into the hydraulic block and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect and Test
Reconnect the electrical harness. Start the tractor, test the differential lock engagement from the cab, check the valve for hydraulic leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the 05.0.53 fault code.
