Check the cause

  1. Inspect the B-pillar keypad to see if the differential lock button is physically stuck, damaged, or jammed with debris.

  2. Locate connector X717 (the designated electrical connector for the Pillar Keypad). Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or loose connections.

  3. Check the wiring harness between the B-pillar keypad (X717) and the Transmission ECU for continuity or shorts to ground/power.

  4. Verify if other codes are present, such as 05.00.53 (Issue With Diff Lock Solenoid Circuit Dyna VT), which could indicate a broader circuit issue rather than just the button.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the battery negative terminal (designated as X730 in the MF electrical diagrams) to prevent short circuits.

  2. Access the Keypad

Carefully pry or unscrew the interior trim panel on the right-hand B-pillar to expose the rear of the keypad module.

  3. Disconnect the Module

Unplug the X717 electrical connector from the back of the B-pillar keypad.

  4. Remove the Keypad

Remove the retaining screws or clips holding the keypad assembly to the pillar trim and pull the unit out.

  5. Install New/Repaired Unit

Seat the replacement or refurbished B-pillar keypad into the trim and secure the fasteners.

  6. Reconnect

Plug the X717 connector back into the module and reinstall the B-pillar trim panel.

  7. Test

Reconnect the battery. Turn the ignition on, clear the stored DTCs using a diagnostic tool, and test the differential lock button to ensure the Dyna-VT transmission registers the command without throwing code 05.00.51.
