Issue description

The sensor responsible for monitoring the height and travel of the suspended front axle (X166 or X167) is sending an erratic, out-of-range, or missing voltage signal to the control unit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the physical linkage connecting the front axle to the position sensor (X166/X167) for bent brackets, disconnected rods, or physical damage from field debris.

  2. Trace the wiring harness from the sensor back to the pillar harness/fuse box connection, looking for chafed wires, corrosion inside the connector plug, or loose pins.

  3. Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor is receiving its reference voltage (typically 5V or 12V depending on the specific tractor generation) and has a solid ground.

  4. Check for accompanying codes that might narrow down the issue (e.g., FA 221 / FA 133 for short to power, or FA 222 / FA 134 for open circuit or short to ground).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a hard, level surface. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine. If you need to work directly under the suspension components, ensure the front axle is properly supported with jack stands to prevent sudden dropping.

  2. Removal

    Locate the Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor on the front axle assembly. Disconnect the electrical harness connector.

  3. Unbolt

    Remove the retaining hardware securing the sensor body and carefully detach the mechanical linkage arm from the sensor.

  4. Installation

    Mount the new sensor and reattach the mechanical linkage. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications (do not overtighten, as the sensor housing is often plastic).

  5. Reconnection

    Apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the electrical connector to prevent moisture ingress, then plug it back in.

  6. Calibration

    Turn on the ignition and use the tractor's dashboard diagnostic menu or a dealer diagnostic tool to run the Front Axle Suspension Calibration procedure. This teaches the module the new sensor's upper and lower voltage limits.

  7. Clear Codes

    Clear the 05.01.82 fault code and test drive the tractor to ensure the suspension adjusts smoothly without throwing new codes.
