Check the cause

  1. Inspect the differential lock button on the side pillar for physical damage, sticking, or debris preventing full depression.

  2. Carefully remove the side pillar trim to access the back of the switch. Disconnect the plug and check for loose pins, moisture, or corrosion.

  3. Use a multimeter to test the switch itself. Verify that the switch opens and closes the circuit properly when toggled.

  4. If the switch tests fine, check the wiring harness running from the side pillar down to the Transmission ECU for chafing, open circuits, or shorts to ground/voltage.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Switch

Carefully pry or unscrew the interior trim panel on the side pillar where the diff lock button is housed.

  3. Remove the Faulty Switch

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the back of the switch. Squeeze the retaining tabs on the switch body and push it out through the front of the bezel.

  4. Install the New Part

Snap the new differential lock switch into the side pillar panel and reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Reassembly

Reinstall the side pillar trim panel.

  6. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a compatible Massey Ferguson diagnostic tool to clear the 05.02.51 DTC from the Transmission ECU.

  7. Test Operation

Start the tractor and engage the differential lock to ensure the system operates normally and the code does not return.
