Massey Ferguson 05.02.82 – Suspension Module (Autotronic 5): Issue With Signal Voltage From Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor. (SUSPENSION)

The control module is receiving an irregular electrical signal from the front axle position sensor (X166). The voltage is either outside the expected operating range (too high or too low) or is behaving erratically, which prevents the suspension system from determining the correct height and position of the front axle.

   Inspect the mechanical linkage connecting the X166 position sensor to the front axle for bending, breaking, or seizing.

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the X166 sensor and check for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

   Test the wiring harness between the X166 sensor and the Autotronic 5 module for continuity, open circuits, and short circuits to ground or power.

   Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage (5V or 12V) and has a solid ground connection.

   Attempt to recalibrate the front axle suspension using a dealer diagnostic tool to see if the sensor voltage is completely out of bounds.

   Secure the tractor

   Park the tractor on a firm, level surface. Engage the parking brake and turn off the engine.

   Support chassis and relieve pressure

   Safely support the front chassis of the tractor and relieve all hydraulic pressure from the front axle suspension system to prevent sudden movement.

   Locate the sensor

   Locate the X166 Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor on the front axle assembly.

   Disconnect wiring

   Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.

   Remove the sensor

   Unbolt the sensor from its mounting bracket and carefully disconnect the mechanical linkage arm from the sensor body.

   Install the new sensor

   Install the new position sensor. Reattach the mechanical linkage, ensuring it moves freely without binding.

   Tighten hardware

   Tighten the mounting hardware to OEM torque specifications.

   Reconnect wiring

   Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

   Lower the tractor

   Lower the tractor back to the ground.

    Perform calibration

    Connect a diagnostic tool (or use the onboard terminal if supported by your model) to perform the mandatory Front Axle Suspension Calibration. The system must learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage values.

    Clear codes and test

    Clear the 05.02.82 fault code and test-drive the tractor to verify proper suspension operation.
