Massey Ferguson 05.03.82 – SUSPENSION Module (Autotronic 4 or Autotronic 5): Issue With Signal Voltage From Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor. (SUSPENSION)
Issue description
The electronic system is receiving a voltage signal from the front axle position sensor (X166 sensor) that is outside the expected parameters (either too high, too low, or out of calibration range).

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and connector going to the X166 Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor for moisture intrusion and corrosion from hydraulic fluid or road salt
Check the valve/sensor battery supply voltage to ensure it is greater than 9.5V, inspecting around the battery and alternator for debris or corrosion that could cause voltage drops
Delete active fault codes, start the vehicle, and road test on rough terrain for 5 minutes; if the fault returns, check wiring continuity back to the Vehicle Load Centre (VLC) or suspension control box
Check for associated Autotronic 5 flash codes (e.g., FA133 for value too high, FA134 for value too low, FA135/FA136 for calibration out of range) to determine if the sensor has failed completely or just lost calibration
Repair steps
Locate the Sensor
Find the X166 position sensor mounted on the front axle suspension linkage.
Removal
Disconnect the wiring harness. Unbolt and carefully remove the old sensor (handle with care as it is a precision instrument).
Installation
Install the new sensor. Ensure the connections are completely clean and properly sealed to prevent future moisture intrusion.
Calibration
The system must be calibrated after sensor replacement for proper operation. Manual Method: Hold the front axle suspension button until it flashes, release it. Press again and hold until the suspension reaches the top stop, release. Press the off/down button until it reaches the bottom stop, then release. Terminal Method: Use the tractor's diagnostic terminal to run the 'Calibrate the suspended front axle' procedure as outlined in the Autotronic 5 service menu.
Testing
Activate the front axle suspension system several times from the lowest to the highest position to check for smooth operation and ensure no error codes return.
