05.03.84

Massey Ferguson 05.03.84 – Suspension Module (SUSPENSION) / Autotronic 4 or Autotronic 5: Issue With Signal Voltage From Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor During Calibration

Issue description

While the tractor's computer was attempting to calibrate the upper and lower limits of the front axle suspension, the voltage signal returning from the position sensor fell outside of the expected parameters (either too high, too low, or erratic). This prevents the system from learning the correct physical stops of the suspension travel.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection of the Linkage: Check the physical linkage connecting the front axle to the position sensor. If the linkage is bent, broken, or disconnected, the sensor will not read the full sweep of the axle's movement during calibration.

  2. Wiring and Connector Check: Inspect the sensor's wiring harness for chafing, breaks, or corrosion. The Autotronic system will fail calibration if there is an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to ground (0V).

  3. Live Voltage Monitoring: Use a diagnostic tool to monitor the live voltage from the front axle position sensor. Manually raise and lower the suspension to ensure the voltage changes smoothly without dropping out or spiking.

Repair steps

  1. Rectify Physical Faults

Repair any damaged wiring or replace the front axle position sensor if it is internally shorted or reading erratically.

  2. Recalibrate the Suspended Front Axle

Once the hardware issue is resolved, perform the suspension calibration procedure: Start the tractor and ensure hydraulic pressure is adequate. Press and hold the front axle suspension button until the indicator light begins to flash, then release it. Press the button again and hold it until the suspension raises to its absolute top position, then release. Press the 'off' (or down) button and hold it until the suspension lowers to its absolute bottom position, then release. The system will then automatically set itself to the middle position between the two stops, completing the calibration.

  3. Clear Codes

Use a diagnostic tool to clear the 05.03.84 DTC from the Suspension Module.
