Massey Ferguson 05.2.53 – Hitch Controller: Issue With Diff Lock Solenoid Circuit (Hitch)

Issue description

The onboard diagnostic (OBD) system has detected an electrical irregularity, open circuit, or short in the circuit responsible for operating the differential lock solenoid. When this circuit fails, the differential lock will not respond when engaged.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the differential lock solenoid (located on the rear hydraulic cover or valve block) for chafed wires, rodent damage, or melted insulation.

  2. Disconnect the 2-pin connector at the solenoid and check for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or loose pins.

  3. With the tractor running (or key ON) and the diff lock switch engaged, use a multimeter to verify that the controller is sending the correct voltage to the solenoid connector.

  4. Measure the resistance across the two pins of the solenoid. If the circuit is open (infinite resistance) or shorted (zero resistance), the solenoid coil has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the hydraulic control valve block to prevent dirt or debris from entering the hydraulic system when the valve is removed.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the diff lock solenoid.

  4. Removal

    Unscrew and remove the faulty solenoid valve assembly from the hydraulic block. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of hydraulic fluid may leak.

  5. Installation

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid valve with clean hydraulic fluid. Thread the new solenoid into the block and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  6. Reconnection

    Plug the electrical connector back into the new solenoid.

  7. Testing

    Clear the stored 05.2.53 DTC using a diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and test the differential lock engagement to ensure proper operation and check for any hydraulic leaks.
