Check the cause
Visual and Mechanical Inspection: Inspect the physical mounting of the X166 position sensor on the front axle. Ensure the mechanical linkage arm connecting the sensor to the axle is intact, not bent, and securely attached.
Wiring and Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins. Trace the wiring harness back toward the Autotronic 5 controller, looking for chafing, breaks, or pinch points.
Circuit Testing: Check the circuit for an open circuit, a short circuit to +12V, or a short circuit to earth (-). Verify that the sensor is receiving the correct reference voltage and has a solid ground.
Live Data Monitoring: If using a dealer diagnostic tool, monitor the live voltage of the X166 sensor while the suspension moves. If the voltage drops out or spikes erratically, the sensor's internal potentiometer is likely failing.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Safely support the front chassis of the tractor to remove weight from the front axle suspension if required for safe access.
Locate the X166 Suspended Front Axle Position Sensor on the front axle suspension assembly.
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.
Unbolt the sensor linkage and mounting bracket from the axle.
Remove the faulty sensor.
Install the new OEM position sensor, ensuring the mechanical linkage is oriented correctly so it does not bind during full suspension travel.
Tighten the mounting hardware to the manufacturer's specified torque.
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the weather seal is seated.
Calibration (Crucial Step): Turn on the tractor and use the onboard terminal or dealer diagnostic software to perform a Front Axle Suspension Calibration. The system must learn the new sensor's minimum and maximum voltage values.
Failure to calibrate will result in subsequent fault codes (such as 05.X.83 or 05.X.84, which indicate calibration issues).
